Discover Australia’s majestic East Coast as you journey at your leisure up the Pacific Highway through Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay.  At the wheel of your own rental car, you can take as much time exploring wineries and the 20 beaches of Port Macquarie or hop on a surf board in Byron Bay without having to ask others what they want to do.  The drive from Sydney to Brisbane is unique in that it’s mostly country roads with a little driving on the Pacific Highway. Fond of road trips? Like to listen to your favorite music? This is the itinerary for you! Suggested Itinerary

 

Day 1: Arrive Sydney – Drive to Hunter Valley (108 Miles/2 hrs)

 

Upon arrival at the Sydney Airport, you will be met by a helpful agent to assist in picking up your rental car.  Settle in behind the wheel and get started on your drive to Hunter Valley through some of the tastiest wine country in Australia. Kick off your shoes and relax in your accommodations in Hunter Valley: Sebel Kirkton Park (standard) or Peppers Guesthouse (B&B)

 

Day 2: Hunter Valley – Port Macquarie (167 miles/ 3.5 hrs)

 

Awake to a beautiful morning and head out to tour some of the amazing wineries of the Hunter Valley.  Hit the Pacific Highway as you journey towards Port Macquarie through the Great Lakes and the Taree sand coastline. Step out into the beautiful small town of Port Macquarie where the locals smile and the beaches are plentiful.  Accommodations in Port Macquarie: Comfort Inn Port Macquarie (standard) or Rydges Port Macquarie (B&B)

 

Day 3: Explore Port Macquarie – Coffs Harbour (110 miles/2 hrs)

 

Spend a few hours on the luxurious beaches of Port Macquarie before you hop back on the Pacific Highway to Coffs Harbour.  Along the way, take in Nambucca Heads on the coast and Bongil Bongil National Park as you drive through. Your rest stop for the evening in Coffs Harbour: Novotel Pacific Bay Resort (standard) or Santa Fe (B&B)

 

Day 4: Coffs HarbourByron Bay (149 miles/3.5 hrs)

 

Head out of Coffs Harbour via Maclean ("The Scottish Town in Australia") as you point north to the surfing paradise of Byron Bay.  Drop into Yamba off the coast road and visit the Clarence Head Lighthouse.  Direct the car back to the Pacific Highway to Ballina (meaning place of many oysters) through Lennox Head and to your destination for the next two nights, Byron Bay. Accommodations: The Byron (standard) or Peppers Casuarina Lodge (B&B)

 

Day 5: Bryon Bay at Leisure

 

You have arrived in one of the most precious destinations in AustraliaByron Bay is known for its laid back qualities with an intense love of the surf. The town is quaint and the locals helpful. You enjoy lounging around town or get busy kayaking, parachuting, learning to surf, bicycling, whale watching, scuba diving or snorkeling…you will be in bliss.  Remember to get out to the most easterly point of Australia at Cape Byron Lighthouse. It’s a must have photo op!

 

Day 6: Byron BayBrisbane (118 miles/ 3 hrs)

 

The Gold Coast Highway is your gateway to the city of Brisbane. On your way stop by Surfer’s Paradise in Gold Coast, Queensland, a bit busier than the quietness of Byron Bay, but still worth the stop.  Brisbane is a great city on the water, smaller than Sydney it still boasts a huge menu of things to do.
